Why do
people have accents?
As phonologists like to say, "a person without an
accent would be like a place without a climate."
Accents are the result of exposure to different cultural and
ethnic linguistic groups geographically and/or socially distant from each
other.
When people are isolated,
stresses and peculiarities start to develop.
The stresses and peculiarities of a somewhat close group
start spreading to each member and new member.
Accents are caused by the early training we get -- the
sounds we learn to make before we reach puberty.
However, with work, accents can be reduced
greatly and sometimes even erased.
